Don’t look now but the conditions on the slopes at West Virginia ski resorts resemble what you would except to find during the mid-season. Snowshoe Mountain Resort began its 35th winter season last Friday morning as the 2008/2009 ski season is now underway in a great fashion.  Over four-feet of natural snow has fallen in the mountains of West Virginia since the end of October creating awesome conditions for Snowshoe Mountain and for the resorts getting ready to open.  Timberline Resort will see its first skiers and snowboarders on December 4, followed by Canaan Valley and Winterplace on December 12. Skiing and Riding Available in West Virginia

Snowshoe Mountain Resort began its 35th winter season last Friday morning with a 9 a.m. rope drop ceremony. The mountain was scheduled to begin winter operations this Wednesday, November 26, but moved up opening day due to amazing early season conditions on the mountain. Just in time for the official start of the season, another 3” of fresh snow fell overnight Thursday, providing the perfect power covering to Snowshoe’s groomed slopes.

Snowshoe Mountain Opens Early

Snowshoe Mountain Resort has announced the resort will open early for the 2008-2009 season on Friday, November 21. Snowshoe has received more than two feet of natural snow since late Saturday and has added several feet of man-made snow with around-the-clock snowmaking operations, allowing the resort to open five days earlier than previously scheduled. With the best early season conditions on record, Snowshoe will open with 6 trails and 2 lifts on Friday. The resort will celebrate this early opening with discounted $29 lift tickets available from Friday, Nov 21 through Tuesday, Nov. 25.

While Snowshoe Mountain will be providing the first alpine action of the season, some folks have already been making tracks in the mountains as cross-country skiers and snowshoers are enjoying the natural snow conditions at White Grass Touring Center in Tucker County.

The announced schedule for the rest of the openings for West Virginia resorts is as follows: Timberline, December 4, Canaan Valley and Winterplace, December 12 and Oglebay later in December. Of course the situation might change as the conditions continue to get better and the cold temperatures remain allowing the snowmakers to work around the clock.

Speaking of snowmaking, when the temperatures dropped into the teens last night in the mountains, over 20 tons of snow was being made at West Virginia resorts when you combine all of the resort’s snowmaking efforts.  That is same as covering a football field with 20 feet of snow in just one hour.

Opening Days Set For WV Ski Resorts

With just days to go before the opening of the West Virginia ski season, Mother Nature has turned everything white at all of the the state’s ski resorts with a mid-November snow storm.  Measureable totals of nearly a half a foot are reported at Canaan Valley and Timberline in Tucker County and Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County.  Winterplace in Raleigh County and Oglebay in Ohio County also received a dusting.

Along with the natural snow has come subfreezing temperatures allowing all of the resorts to fire up their snowmaking machines in preperation for the first skiers and snowboarders of the season.  All of the resorts have announcing their opening day plans with Snowshoe’s first day being November 26, followed by Timberline on December 4 and Canaan Valley and Winterplace on December 12.  Officials at Oglebay are shooting for a mid to late December opening.
